Lines of Acknowledgement

2021
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Commissioned by City of Minneapolis

Lines of Acknowledgment is a companion piece to the artwork, Lines of Flight, Human, that spans the building’s second floor facade and skyway. Inspired by the history of human migration to the region now known as Minnesota, the field of dashed lines encodes both the region’s Indigenous place names (blue and white) and the names of countries from which people migrated (magenta). A photograph of the Mississippi River was overlaid on this pattern creating its variations. Lines of Acknowledgment depicts the history of migration to the state as a complex, layered patterning of diverse peoples moving through space and time.
